Ah, January. Snowy January. Cold January. Nothing-happened January. Or, at least to NYC FurMeets, nothing happened. Well, something was scheduled to, but then didn’t. There was supposed to be FurWalk 11 on the High Line to commemorate FurWalk 0 (a.k.a. Birdstrike) from the previous January. But then, it got cold and was supposed to snow a lot, so a few days before it happened, the whole thing got rescheduled for February. Oh well, at least badges for it weren’t printed very far in adv— wait I’m being told now that is exactly what happened.

Four fursuiters gathered in the Starbucks Reserve on 14th St in Manhattan.

That was the only NYCFM event scheduled for January, intended to be a light month for the staffers and the attendees. Plus, did I mention it’s cold and windy in January? Don’t go out and do things! It would be really stupid if everyone went to a colder place to be a furry.

So, February comes, and NYCFM starts it off with a nice bar event returning to Brooklyn’s Zombie Hut to celebrate the birthdays of NYCFM co-founder Keiron and his husband. (Keiron’s husband, Ezekiel, did not make it.) Around 20 to 25 people showed up, and Keiron got cake on his beak!

Now there are two FurWalks because of the postponement of the January one. A few days after the birthday party, back on the High Line for a second attempt at FurWalk 11. The route was trimmed because of the anticipated wind and cold. Instead of going to walk the whole High Line, the plan was to walk from Penn Station to The Shed, back to Penn Station, and take a local downtown C or E train to 14th St, finishing at Chelsea Market.

They learned their lesson this time: don’t print the badges too early, maybe print them the night before. It would be terrible if the High Line closed even after that point and the info on the badge was wrong aga— oh dear, did that happen? They had to ditch that route, skipping the High Line and just taking the E train down from Penn Station. It was so cold and windy that the wind chill was below freezing! Imagine if you were an event organizer and you had to put up with stuff like that. Glad it’s not me. This became more of a FurRide Lite, but 54 people still showed!

The next weekend FurFlix was supposed to return to watch Goat (2026), but unfortunately got canceled due to low RSVPs. Come to the next one!

Finally, the month ended out with a full-featured FurWalk 12 from Rockefeller Park which wound through the Financial District to the South Street Seaport, with stops outside City Hall and the New York Stock Exchange buildings. The route deviated a bit from the planned one once reaching the Charging Bull statue, though. Now, it would be really funny, because things come in groups of three, if something happened with the badges this time. Say, the first half of the alphabet couldn’t get printed. Haha yes, that did happen. Fane can’t catch a break, can she.

The walk ended around 5:30, after the sun set on a nice cool February day, as we looked out to the Brooklyn Bridge. 83 furs showed, several of which attended that night’s Phoenix Bark event, hosted by the wonderful NYFurs org.

In March, FurWalk 13 will be a redemption to the High Line, and a FurBar will take place at the end of the month. And look forward to events on April 11 and 21 for FurWalk 14 and FurBar 9. See you there!
